I've seen some articles lately about recent progress in desalinating ocean water... what are your thoughts on the topic? Seems like a horrible idea to me. | | Back to top

I guess it mainly comes down to how much you plan on desalinating, over a long period of time is where you would run into issues. do you still have a link to the article? | | Back to top

NIU was kind of me waiting too late to apply anywhere else really. I took off more time than I should've between my associates and now. Knowing that the longer you're away the harder it is to get back in, I shot an app off to NIU where I knew I'd be accepted, and it's not too far from home. I imagine the first semester or two will be mainly base level classes that'll transfer around if I plan to change schools. Hopefully, anyway. It wasn't my first choice. | | Back to top

Environmental; Climate/Anenmometery
Unity College
BS Environmental Engineering, minor environmental policy
Climate change mitigation is ultimately what I do. Most of what I do revolves around alternative energy, natural resource management, and policy analysis. I hope to help develop climate legislation, energy legislation, implement both, all while doing much of the same on a more local level. Anenmometery is the studying wind resource and right now I do a lot of wind power planning for the public domain, GIS mapping, installing anemometers and analyzing the data for individuals, towns and municipalities. When I graduate I'll probably start my own environmental consulting firm and we'll specialize in home energy audits, retrofits, wind power planning and installation, helping other private and public enterprise reduce their carbon and ecological footprints. If I get a masters, I'll hopefully be a chief engineer doing large off-shore wind farms and helping the DOE, USDA, USF&W, researching at a University.

Right now if the entire state of rhode island was a solar panel it would generate enough energy to power the whole country. Imagine if the technology evolved even more.
thats what i'm saying, technology is getting exponentially better and we have to use it to our advantage. Instead we are just crippling ourselves further. | | Back to top

What field are you in... biophysics/neuroscience
Where are you going/did you go to school... community college for now then I will hopefully transfer to UCLA or UC San Diego
What degrees do you have/plan to have... working on my associates right now and hope to get my PhD eventually

What kind of work are you currently during... fundamental intro level courses.
holy crap theres someone into biophysics here?!?!?!??!! thats so rare, I've only met one other biophysics major ever.
What field are you in... biophysics/biochemistry
Where are you going/did you go to school... transferred from santa monica college to UCLA, now going to Stanford!! Choosing between there and CalTech was REALLY. FUCKING. HARD. Had to submit my decision last night.
What degrees do you have/plan to have... Graduating with B.S. in Biochemistry this Spring, start PhD at Stanford in Biophysics this Fall
What do you hope to achieve in your field... interested in structural biology and structure-function relationships in biological macromolecules, cellular motility and transportation, protein and enzyme engineering for both biomedical and environmental purposes, anything on the interface of physics/chemistry/biology. Also really interested in astrobiology!! Would like to stay in academia, but not opposed to starting my own company (fuck pharma though)
What kind of work are you currently during... I work in the Gimzewski lab at UCLA constructing a scanning tunneling/atomic force microscope that visualizes surfaces on the atomic scale. Basically, when I'm not building anything, I sit at a computer and look at atoms everyday! Right now we're looking at a molecule called hexa-tert-butyl decacyclene that may be used as a molecular switch as a way to surpass Moore's Law (the size of the transistor will be the size of a single molecule by 2020 if processing speeds are to increase).
Of course you guys would go to UCLA after I graduate. I only made a few friends there since hardly any south campus majors (read: science majors) are remotely interesting people (mostly pre-meds), and most of em get stuck in the "Westwood bubble". Westwood blows. Don't stay there, theres no excuse. LA is huge. The coolest people I met were mostly grad students.
I loved going to UCLA a ton, but do take into account the impending budget cuts. I've already started noticing the effects... | | Back to top

What degrees do you have/plan to have... working on my associates right now and hope to get my PhD eventually
What do you hope to achieve in your field... study human instinct/intuition and the relationship between quantum physics and the human nervous systems, particularly the enteric nervous system
THIS. IS. AWESOME. I have a feeling I will end up at UC San Diego. So jealous that you get to look at atoms every day. Question: How intensely do you rely on mathematics in biophysics? I love math, but I have been real lazy in my once-a-week pre-calculus class. I need motivation. | | Back to top

Where are you going/did you go to school? University of South Carolina
What degrees do you have/plan to have? I have a B.Sc. in Biology, P.S.M. in Plant Biotechnology, and I'm currently in the last 16 months of my Ph.D. in Plant Biology.
What do you hope to achieve in your field? Either work for the USDA or teach in a university.
What kind of work are you currently during? I work in genetic alteration of wetland plants to be used as an alternative energy source as biomass. I am reducing the lignin content so plant biomass can be used for Fischer-Tropsch process. I am also enhancing the lignin content so plant biomass can be used for pelleting/briquettes as a burning source. | | Back to top

sister is a sophmore food science major this year. loves it. the bio and chem classes are rough she says, but most of that is attributable to TAs with poor english skills. She's taking a Beer Brewing class next semester. i told her she has to bring me a sample.
I'm currently in community college as a history major, hoping to turn that into some sort of museum work eventually. | | Back to top

ah, that sounds awesome. I just finished writing a paper on the maillard browning reaction, and how it relates to beer brewing.
One problem, is that I need to find a school that has a good food science program, but I'm not ready to leave Austin. The closest school is Texas Tech, in Lubbock, but who the fuck wants to live in Lubbock
If I can't find anything, I'll probably just go to UT for nutrition. not the same thing, but still an interest of mine.
I'd like to get more into food science, because I'm a vegan going through culinary school for pastry... so there is a lot of shit I have to learn about how things work and why in terms of substitutions. | | Back to top
