-Physics/Math
-JMU. William and mary in the next few weeks
-BS in Physics and math. Trying to get a masters of science eventually. going to school for education(math) in june
-work, nothing lofty yet
- bumming around doing retail for another two weeks, going to school in like a month for a masters of education, having extreme second thoughts, applied to a bunch of math/sciencey jobs, going to do some follow up calls tomorrow. and naturally apply for more jobs.

any good place to look for math/science type jobs, i applied to some stuff through usajobs, but am kind of drawing a blank on where to look. if you guys know of anything let me know.

ideally i will get a good fun job that pays decent, and i won't hate myself, go back to school on company dime. a phd would be nice and i have some tentative plans on going back in like 5 years but we'll see.

science and math are awesome. im rusty as hell, i took the past year off and worked retail. hated/hate my life. thankfully thats over and im moving forward with my life.

I love biochemistry more than anything, but a degree in mechanical engineering will instantly make you more money out of undergrad. I think the starting pay for an engineer straight out of college is like 70k or something ridiculous. Theres no way you can get that with biochem without an advanced degree.

I kind of wish I had done biomolecular engineering, but I didn't even know that was a possibility until I was almost finished with my degree.

I have to second this. If your primary goal is work, really think hard about whether you want to get into science or engineering.

Conversely, if you're interested in scientific research, try to go the science route. I can't comment on other fields, but any engineering grad students our geology department has had that I've met have really struggled with the fact that sometimes you can't just plug numbers into an equation and get a definite answer. The idea of multiple working hypotheses seems somewhat absent in undergrad engineering curriculums, but necessary for any kind of forensic science.

If I had gotten in at Carnegie Mellon or Case Western, which are number 1 and 2 for AI programs in the country, if not the world, I would've most likely ended up working on those ASIMO robots Honda is making, but my GPA was just on the low end of their mid 50% scale, so I wasn't accepted. Those robots are awesome. We have a post-doc in our lab on fellowship that had a degree in robotics and works on a number of different art/science projects. We also just got some ridiculous 7million dollar DARPA A.I. grant for fractal networks.

I want to be a scientist. Waterloo offers you a Bachelor of Applied Science so I think it's different than a normal BSc.

Honestly, I think engineering is a job degree not research but that's my opinion. Upon research, I found that biochemists make a lot more in the later years.

Bummer, why do you want to get out of it?

Short version of the story:

I was at PSU for 5 yrs. PhD track. I was through all my cumes and orals and was working through my thesis research. You know all those horror stories of working for a non tenure track faculty? I lived through one of those. Bitch was crazy as a motherfucker. Sucked any desire for the field out of almost anyone that worked for her before she got tenure. Once she got tenure (in my fifth year) she decided she didn't need anyone she didn;t get along with and did anything she could to get us out of the program.

that shit blows. my undergrad bio professor tried that shit with me when she got chair of the department. it's not as fucked as PhD professor low balling people, though.

I got accepted there for the graduate program in biochemistry but its kind of looked down upon to go to your same school for grad. They want you to network and learn how to be out of your comfort zone. Its gonna suck moving, I love LA more than fucking anything. Not like I'd be able to go to many more Dodger games in grad school, but now I only get to see them a few times a year

its for the best...its for the best....its for the best...thats all I gotta keep telling myself

I buy Avocado's Number guacamole at trader joe's. I refuse to buy any other guac they sell.

and Attack Tijuana: if you wanna eventually go to grad school DO RESEARCH. Theres so many research opportunities at UCLA its ridiculous, and some of them even fund you. Go to the undergraduate research center (2121 life science building) or look at their website (google UCLA URC) to find out more info. If you're a minority, theres even more opportunities for funding.

I'm not sure about engineering, but most grad programs these days only accept people with prior research experience. A good letter of rec from a well-known PI will basically get you in anywhere you want.

Do any of you guys know what it's like for international students who want to get their PhDs from the US? Specifically within neuroscience?
I've been considering it, but I can't get a clear idea of how it works for us across the pond..

A lot of people do it. Usually, depending on the program, the department will accept 1-2 international students with funding. Typically, they usually will do a phone interview instead of flying you out. You have to take both the GRE as well as the TOEFL exam, and some programs may also require a GRE subject test (a test in either biology or biochemistry is probably sufficient, but there is no neuroscience subject test). Its much much harder to get accepted though, so your stats and letters of rec really need to be good. It really depends on each school, and they usually should have most of the information on their respective websites. Otherwise they'll have someone to contact for info. Do you have any research experience?

Thank you so much I read about the tests, in terms of letter of recommendation I'll be fine. When it comes to stats, is it like here in the UK that they check your grades AND things such as work experience, volunteering, extracurricular activities and such that you have been involved in, or is grades and grades only?
I don't have the research experience now, but I'm working at a medical research institute this summer as an intern in their neuroscience department, so I will have some experience I guess.
Any recommendations as to what universities are very science-inclined? I don't need a list of the best ones, just an idea of what I could look into further..

Thanks again for the help! Who knows, maybe in a year I'll be living on your side of the planet..

Stoked on all the geologists. Post pics of your field areas!

What field are you in? Geology
Where are you going/did you go to school? In my final year at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand
What degrees do you have/plan to have? BSc, MSc in the mid-distant future
What do you hope to achieve in your field? Ultimate goal is to end up in mineral exploration, but who knows. I've taken every undergrad geology and geophysics paper my Uni offers and still can't decide on an area to specialize.
What kind of work are you currently doing? Working once a fortnight at a pathology center, too many papers to work a real job.

Yeah, they pretty much go for the whole package here as well. Grades and test scores are important, but not nearly as important as research experience. I'd suggest finding a lab and working in it as soon as possible. But yeah, depending on the school, you can have up to 20% of the class being international students, so you've definitely got a chance.

Has classes I've even considered taking here but couldn't fit into my schedule. Considering watching some of these lectures over summer. Awesome website.

so many biochem nerds here...I swear the last science thread a couple years ago died so quickly and was mostly social science people.

Either would be great. My company is down 100% (they suggested both), but I'm just having difficulty finding a faculty advisor.

I suppose I should answer, too..

What field are you in... biophysics/neuroscience
Where are you going/did you go to school... community college for now then I will hopefully transfer to UCLA or UC San Diego
What degrees do you have/plan to have... working on my associates right now and hope to get my PhD eventually
What do you hope to achieve in your field... study human instinct/intuition and the relationship between quantum physics and the human nervous systems, particularly the enteric nervous system
What kind of work are you currently during... fundamental intro level courses.

holy crap theres someone into biophysics here?!?!?!??!! thats so rare, I've only met one other biophysics major ever.

What field are you in... biophysics/biochemistry

Where are you going/did you go to school... transferred from santa monica college to UCLA, now going to Stanford!! Choosing between there and CalTech was REALLY. FUCKING. HARD. Had to submit my decision last night.

What degrees do you have/plan to have... Graduating with B.S. in Biochemistry this Spring, start PhD at Stanford in Biophysics this Fall

What do you hope to achieve in your field... interested in structural biology and structure-function relationships in biological macromolecules, cellular motility and transportation, protein and enzyme engineering for both biomedical and environmental purposes, anything on the interface of physics/chemistry/biology. Also really interested in astrobiology!! Would like to stay in academia, but not opposed to starting my own company (fuck pharma though)

What kind of work are you currently during... I work in the Gimzewski lab at UCLA constructing a scanning tunneling/atomic force microscope that visualizes surfaces on the atomic scale. Basically, when I'm not building anything, I sit at a computer and look at atoms everyday! Right now we're looking at a molecule called hexa-tert-butyl decacyclene that may be used as a molecular switch as a way to surpass Moore's Law (the size of the transistor will be the size of a single molecule by 2020 if processing speeds are to increase).

Of course you guys would go to UCLA after I graduate. I only made a few friends there since hardly any south campus majors (read: science majors) are remotely interesting people (mostly pre-meds), and most of em get stuck in the "Westwood bubble". Westwood blows. Don't stay there, theres no excuse. LA is huge. The coolest people I met were mostly grad students.

I loved going to UCLA a ton, but do take into account the impending budget cuts. I've already started noticing the effects...

dude, UCLA then Stanford? insanely jealous. i have friends at UCLA and i've visited and spent the night a few times. its such an awesome school.

It has its good sides and its bad. What year are your friends?

I hardly ever see hardcore/punk kids around. I saw one dude on the science campus in an Infest shirt once and had to do a double take.

I Thrash Therefore I Am-It's on my list of dream schools, I guess we'll see what happens but it's a pretty long ways off.

I went to space camp. Does that count?

Adding this to the list of books I need to read this summer.

You go to Columbia, I think you'll be fine

Kind of off topic, but since we're talking about Stanford you should all download Folding@Home if you haven't already. Its a distributed computing program that uses the processing power you aren't using and acts as a supercomputer to further investigate mechanisms of protein folding and misfolding (responsible for ALS, alzheimers, parkinsons, cancer, etc). The professor who invented it is now the director of my graduate program. He's fucking awesome.

Haha, they have 9 spots for 350 applicants. I'm not getting my hopes up.

Also, I went to Space Camp in Alabama. I didn't even know they had one in Idyllwild.

When I went it sucked. They didn't even have the zero grav thing running. All I remember is going rock climbing and taking classes... wtf?
