haha, yeah it's alot of books, but my shop is pretty sweet where they take 20% off on new issues that week plus they take off an additional 20% off the total.
basically it comes out to me spending on average $30-50 a week on comics.
How is that even fiscally possible? | | Back to top

By the sound of that, by the skin of the teeth. The bigger comic companies sell their comics to the stores from the wholesaler at 55% discount (meaning shops pay 45% of the cover price, then they charge whatever). So it's not uncommon for a 20% discount and some stores can do 30%, but 40%? Damn fuckin ese. | | Back to top

Of all of the industries to cut a discount, comics really can't afford to do that. Does your store sell other stuff? I know one of my old stores was half games/cards and since that paid half the rent, that is what kept them alive. | | Back to top

Well this is only on new releases (for the current week and last week) where they take off 20% off the cover price. The shop throws another 20% off the TOTAL, so it's not 40%, sorry if I worded it wrong. so if a book is $2.99, it's rung up as $2.40 and lets say my total at the end is $30, then the total will be $24.
They are probably the busiest comic book shop in Orange County (shop is called Comics, Toons and Toys in Tustin, Ca) I know they order the most single issues out of any shop around me. I'm not sure how profitable they are but I don't think they are in any trouble of going out of business or anything. They sell toys, cards and they have a whole Manga room. Also the only store that sells variants for the most lowest prices I've seen too. I love my shop, they take care of me as well as all their customers pretty well. | | Back to top

On Free Comic Book Day they were allowing to pick 5 free comics per person, other shops around my area were only letting you get 1-3 books. Also keep in mind their back issues, TP's, graphic novels, books, cards, toys and everything else is still regular price.
my other money saving shop is Pulp Fiction in Long Beach, Ca. I go there for TP's and graphic novels. if you pay with cash all Marvel/DC/Image/Dark Horse TP's are 40% cover price. All IDW/Boom/Dynamite are 30% and everyone else 20%. if you pay with a credit card it's costs 10% more (so instead of 40% it's 30%, etc...). This includes all Absolute Editions, Omnibus, art books... aside from rare editions or out of print books that are normal price.
they sell all their books online as cheapgraphicnovels.com at the same price (with like 5% more off for shipping) so if you go in the shop they have a huge selection. They also have a "Damaged/Returns" area in the shop where it's 50% off or more. | | Back to top

I've only heard about this title and saw bits and pieces here and there so it's nice to see Vertigo collect all 16 issues in one trade. I'm only like 2 chapters in and it's basically like if Quadrophenia mixed in with a bit of sci-fi. Definitely a bit different from what Brubaker is known for. | | Back to top

haha, that was a pretty funny article.
for all you James Stokoe Orc Stain fans, there is a kickstarter for a graphic novel that he and Mark Andrew Smith are working on called Sullivan's Sluggers". Looks pretty awesome and how it's already got like 6x the original financial goal. check it out, you can only get the hardback through them:

No, usually they are required to put all of the money into the project. Putting 30,000 into a hardcover should be impossible though.
I'm not sure of how they would keep track of what they do with the money they get, but I mean if they are getting so much more than what they're asking for, couldn't they just pocket it for another book down the line?
I think they have the right to pocket it but to avoid pissing people off most creators 'say' they are putting it into the book. No idea what actually goes down. | | Back to top

They're almost at $40,000 now. I wouldn't mind if they pocket the profits, they wouldn't need that much more to print softcover versions down the line. | | Back to top
